Игра продолжает сюжетные события своей идеологической наставницы, а также традиции игрового процесса, заложенные в ней. Кроме этого, данная игра также выступает показателем того, что независимые разработчики при финансировании со стороны пользователей могут создать действительно первоклассный и хорошо оптимизированный продукт как для слабых ноутбуков, так и для ПК-платформ под управлением Windows.
Первая Divinity Original Sin запомнилась пользователям благодаря возможности поиграть за так называемых инквизиторов или же за охотников на чародеев, которым подвластна запретная сила Истока. Во второй же части сюжет повествуется от лица одного из пресловутых заклинателей Истока, которые были пойманы и сосланы отбывать свое наказание на остров, где расположен Форт с ироничным названием «Радость». Перед игроком стоит задача сбежать из тюрьмы, но сделать это невозможно ровно до тех пор, покуда магический ошейник будет оставаться на шее героя. Примечательно, что данный квест является не просто началом обучающей цепи, а самым что ни на есть натуральным многочасовым приключением, демонстрирующим главные достоинства сиквела.
Невзирая на все интриги повествования, сюжет в представленной RPG отыгрывает далеко не самую важную роль, поскольку вся игра представляет из себя огромную «песочницу» со случайной генерацией окружения, в которое игрок попадает после крушения корабля. Этот момент дает понять, что пользователь будет прокладывать себе стезю самостоятельно, выбирая те или иные варианты для решения многочисленных проблем, например, как себя подать незнакомцу, с кем начать диалог и так далее.
